John is the director of Grandfield Technology specialising in areas including cast-house, remelting and refining technology including metal purity, direct chill casting (VDC & HDC, slab and billet), dross formation, dross processing, molten metal filtration, inclusion removal, degassing, sodium removal, magnesium removal, boron treatment, alloying addition practice, casthouse greenhouse emissions and LCA, wheel and belt, ingot conveyor and sow casting, twin roll casting, water cooling and water treatment, furnace operations and refractories, molten metal handling, crucible treatment, molten metal and water explosions and safe handling and mathematical modelling of casting, cast-house safety issues, economics and productivity.

John has been the chair of Aluminium Cast House Technology six times and the TMS Light Metals in 2014.
