ASI's new GHG emissions reduction pathway tool steers sector towards a low-carbon future
The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) has this month launched its method for Entity-level GHG emissions reduction pathways, the first of its kind for the sector.
Since 2018, the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) has been dedicated to steering the aluminium sector towards a 1.5-degree aligned future. ASI's Method is set to be integrated into the Performance Standard Guidance in May 2024, from when its use will become mandatory by all Entities seeking ASI Certification, no matter where they sit on the value chain, including aluminium using companies.
Derived from existing 1.5-degree scenarios for the aluminium sector, in turn broadly aligned with the IEA Net Zero Emissions (NZE) scenario and based on GHG Protocol emissions accounting methodology, ASI’s method is designed to ensure that ASI Performance Standard certifying Entities remain within the sector's remaining emissions budget of 15 billion tonnes of CO2.
With over 1 billion tonnes of CO2 emitted by the aluminium industry every year, ASI's initiative tackles this challenge while accounting for increasing demand for aluminium products, essential for the decarbonisation of other sectors and consuming segments.
Reflecting best practices through updates to ASI’s Complaints Mechanism
Complaints Resolution Mechanisms (CMs) are central tools to ensure that companies actually implement their obligations stipulated by the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and other relevant human rights provisions. Since 2015, ASI has had its own CM that aggrieved persons can use in respect to ASI’s standards-setting processes, certification program, auditor conduct and ASI policies and procedures. In February 2024, the ASI Board adopted a revised fourth version of the ASI CM.
Re-Certification as a marker of ASI Member commitment to continuous improvement
Through their re-certification to the 2022 Standards, ASI's Members reinforce their credibility and show leadership in adopting sustainable practices by assuring their operations against more stringent ESG criteria. To highlight the transition to the 2022 Standards, re-certification announcements for these are being published on the ASI website, in addition to the usual first Certification announcements.
The revised ASI Standards (2022), developed through extensive multi-stakeholder dialogue over several years, reflect the latest best practices in sustainability, responsible sourcing, and environmental stewardship within the aluminium industry. For Members that were certified against the 2017 Standards, re-certification to the 2022 Standards reflects their dedication to continual improvement and maintaining a high level of performance against evolving environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria.
The trend of re-certifications within ASI highlights the Standards' effectiveness in fostering a culture of continuous improvement and long-term commitment among its Members, which is essential for achieving its overarching mission to foster the responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium.
ASI joins ASEAN Bauxite Industry Conference 2024 as Association Partner
ASI has joined the ASEAN Bauxite Industry Conference 2024 as an Association Partner. The conference provides an opportunity for dialogue and knowledge sharing between global industry leaders.
ASI's Director of Assurance, Cameron Jones, will attend as a guest speaker. He will also participate in the ESG Round Table Session during the Opening Ceremony. The conference will take place in Jakarta, Indonesia from June 11-12, 2024.
Representatives of our Secretariat will be available for meetings during the course of the event. If you would like to arrange a meeting, email Chinelo Etiaba, ASI Membership Director.

Upholding labour rights in the aluminium value chain through the ASI Performance Standard
The aluminium industry provides employment opportunities across its complex global value chain, from bauxite mining to aluminium product manufacturing and sales. However, the sector has faced labour rights challenges, including issues around freedom of association, child labour, discrimination, forced labour and poor working conditions.
ASI aims to drive responsible production and sourcing practices, including the protection of Labour Rights through its Standards and assurance framework. In light of the UN's World Day of Social Justice on February 20, we take stock of the role ASI plays to uphold Labour Rights in the aluminium value chain.
The 30th World Aluminium Conference will be held over three days, from May 14-16, 2024 at the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel in London. ASI will be co-hosting the event, alongside the International Aluminium Institute. Book by 11 March to save £300.
