We are 6 years away from 2030 – the year for so many global sustainability goals for our planet, its people, and the natural environment. ASI’s 2030 goals centre on climate, circularity, nature and human rights as priority issues for the aluminium value chain. What are the challenges and barriers we’re facing, and how does ASI’s Strategy aim to tackle them?
COP 28 outcomes and ASI’s approach to addressing Climate Change challenges
The COP 28 UN Climate Change Conference in Dubai (December 2023) ended with a decision by Parties to transition away from “fossil fuels”, the first time such a formal outcome has appeared since negotiations began three decades ago. As a standards-setting and certification body for aluminium producing and consuming Entities with a multi-stakeholder approach and, importantly, a broad sustainability perspective, ASI is part of the conversation.
What does "Provisional Certification" mean in the ASI context?
Global sustainability standards, like ASI, play a crucial role in shaping responsible practices across industries. Designed to account for diverse circumstances within the aluminium sector, Provisional Certifications act as an entry point for Members to engage with ASI's extensive ESG criteria over time.
As the ASI Standards evolve, Provisional Certifications also provide an opportunity for members and their Entities to commence their ASI Certification journey, while requiring a commitment to move towards Full Certification as soon as is practically possible, which in turn facilitates a continuity of engagement, improvement, and alignment of practices to updated Standard criteria.
ASI and IPAF lead workshops in bauxite mining regions of Guinea
ASI and IPAF network in Guinea are conducting training workshops on the bauxite mining cycle from exploration to extraction and rehabilitation, and sharing this information with local communities in local languages. The first stage of this project, initiated in 2022, involved field research in bauxite mining regions such as Boké and Kindia to gain insights into community perceptions of bauxite extraction and develop the training approach and content. Over 750 participants attended the training sessions in December 2023 and January 2024, and more workshops are planned.
The Indigenous Peoples Advisory Forum (IPAF) is designed to be a communications and engagement platform between representatives of Indigenous Peoples and ASI. IPAF members also participate in – and provide input, advice and recommendations for – key areas of ASI’s work with and for Indigenous Peoples.
