ASI GHG emissions from flights: 2023 data and actions

In 2022, we started to collect and monitor data on Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) from ASI funded flights – the most material contributor to our organisation's climate impacts. Data for 2023 is now available.

ASI makes flight travel arrangements for relevant personnel and stakeholders (e.g., Board, IPAF) to attend the annual in-person Board meeting, Standards Committee meeting, northern/southern hemisphere team meetings, witness assessments of ASI audits, and in-country workshops with Indigenous Peoples Advisory Forum (IPAF) members.

Data on greenhouse gas emissions from these ASI-funded flights in 2023 revealed an increase from 175 tons CO2e in 2022 to 255 tons CO2e in 2023. The increase reflects post-pandemic travel levels returning to what might be considered a 'normal' level. Nonetheless, ASI continues to employ strategies that ensure that air travel is undertaken in a manner that is strategically aligned with ASI's mission and sustainability policy.

RMI’s GHG Reporting pilot tests reveal improvement opportunities

ASI Civil Society Member, RMI, has published four case studies on the pilot tests of their Steel and Aluminium GHG Emissions Reporting Guidance.

The pilots were designed to test the guidance in various scenarios and identify improvement opportunities and included input from ASI Production & Transformation Members Alcoa and Hydro. The results led to a standardised reporting method, enhanced understanding of emissions transparency, provided learning opportunities for integrating emissions data into decarbonization strategies, and fostered collaborative supplier-customer dialogues on decarbonization efforts.

ASI and IPAF participate in Global Investor Commission on Mining 2030

Father Nicholas Barla, Indigenous Peoples Advisory Forum (IPAF) member and ASI Standards Committee member, as well as Mark Annandale, ASI’s Director of Research and IPAF Adviser are involved in this important mining sector sustainability initiative.

The Global Investor Commission on Mining 2030 is spearheading an initiative to transform the mining sector into a socially and environmentally responsible industry by 2030. Father Nicholas Barla, a member of the Indigenous Peoples Advisory Forum (IPAF), and a participant in the ASI Standards Committee, has been chosen to contribute to the Commission.

Recently, the Commission formed a Technical Advisory Committee, including Mark Annandale, ASI’s Director of Research and IPAF Adviser, to dispense expert counsel. This committee is tasked with guiding investors and the finance sector in promoting this vision, reviewing outputs, addressing technical concerns, and sharing knowledge over the next two years.

Sustainability Specialists in Demand

When company efforts on environment or sustainability first got started, it was often just one person’s role in an organisation! Increasingly it requires a team of experts, and these teams feel stretched very thin as they engage across the business and into long-term strategy. Implementing, reporting and disclosure, and evolving legislation take up an ever-increasing amount of time. How will these teams continue to grow and develop?

The World Economic Forum Future of Jobs Report in 2023 (The Future of Jobs Report 2023 ) found Sustainability Specialists to be the second highest in projected job creation for 2023-2027 (amongst a sea of AI, machine learning, information security and fintech type roles). Demand for 30% more than 2023 levels of sustainability roes are anticipated to be needed - over the next 3-4 years.

That is a big pipeline to fill. ASI’s educationAL platform provides accessible material for specialists and generalists on sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain. Our recent modules and webinars on ASI’s 1.5C aligned GHG Pathways Tool (links/refer other articles) have been well received.

We’d love to hear from you about your learning needs to build the sustainability competencies for the challenges ahead. Contact ASI Membership Director, Chinelo Etiaba.
