ASI News - August 2023

The Coc Material Flow diagram now includes four years of data, from 2019 to 2022.

In this edition:

ASI CoC Material Flows: 2022 update

The 2022 data shows that the early uptake of CoC Certification at the bauxite mining and alumina refining stages created a stable supply of materials reaching aluminium smelters year-on-year. The flows of ASI Aluminium from smelters and re-melters down to final products have increased.

In 2022, ASI Chain of Custody (CoC) Material flows covered:

  • 17% of total global bauxite and alumina supply,
  • 10% of primary aluminium,
  • 2% of semi-fabricated products, and
  • 3% of pre- and post-consumer scrap.
ASI Aluminium was in 2% of the aluminium in finished goods. At the beginning of the aluminium value chain, one-quarter of global mined bauxite production has been covered by both ASI Performance and Chain of Custody certification during 2022.

Workshop report: Critical Minerals and Indigenous Peoples

Climate, nature and human rights issues are colliding in the energy transitions efforts that are underway.  A recent workshop brought together 35 First Nations, industry, government, academia and initiative representatives to discuss the challenges and imperatives for a just transition.

The workshop aimed to challenge established notions, highlighting that the global energy transition isn't evenly global and increased mining isn't universally necessary. One thing seems clear, however:  there will be more mining in some places, primarily Indigenous Peoples’ lands.

At the workshop, ASI shared its various engagement activities with Indigenous Peoples as rights-holders. Indigenous communities may or may not want to see mining on their lands, but in all cases want to see engagement processes being appropriately resourced, their own knowledge taken into account, and the principles and practices of Free Prior Informed Consent (FPIC) genuinely implemented.

Progress update: Development of a method for determination of 1.5 degree aligned GHG emissions pathways for ASI Entities

The ASI Climate Change Working Group is on course to deliver a draft method to the ASI Standards Committee in September 2023, for review and decision on recommending it to the ASI Board for “ASI endorsement” in Q4.

For the past six months the Working Group has been developing a method that ASI Entities can use to define GHG Emissions Reduction Pathways, consistent with a 1.5ºC warming scenario, for potential endorsement by the ASI Board in Q4 2023. This method is required to demonstrate conformance with ASI Performance Standard V3 Criterion 5.3, to set emissions reduction targets and to disclose performance. No such method currently exists for all ASI certifying member classes and their supply chain activities.

A draft Microsoft Excel workbook is available that enables Members to input their own Entity data in order to test and provide feedback on the draft method, as well as on the tool’s functionality.

August special communications focus: ASI Celebrates the UN International Day for the World's Indigenous Peoples

Inspired by the UN’s International Day for the World's Indigenous Peoples on August 9, ASI planned a month of highlights of its work with Indigenous and local communities in collaboration with IPAF (Indigenous Peoples Advisory Forum). Throughout August, ASI hosted online events and published content to showcase the outcomes and ongoing projects in this space.

The focus month featured a 45 Minutes on… webinar featuring Mark Annandale (IPAF Advisor), that provides an overview of IPAF's work, recent outcomes, ongoing projects, and a glimpse of what's coming up in the month ahead. Later in the month, a 45 Minutes on webinar... with Dr Penda Diallo (ASI Qualitative Research Manager) focused on the outcomes of a research project in Guinea: “Understanding the perception of local and rural communities in bauxite mining regions in Guinea”. The session also featured Mark Annandale (IPAF Advisor), Houdy Bah (IPAF Representative) and Mamadou Billo Bah (Community of Hamdalaye Representative) who provided insights into the research findings and feedback from communities.
