Alcomet AD has achieved ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) Certification for its production facilities located in Shumen, Bulgaria. The company produces rolled and extruded aluminium products for use in the food and beverage, pharmaceutical, building and construction, and automotive industries. Its facilities have a total production capacity of 100,000 tonnes per year.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that Alcomet AD has been certified against the ASI Performance Standard for re-melting/refining, extruded and rolled products manufacturing at its Shumen production facilities in Bulgara. The plant integrates the entire downstream production cycle including billet and coil-casting, extrusion and cold-rolling, and is the first plant to achieve ASI Certification in Bulgaria.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain. It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Environment, Social, and Governance, which address key issues such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions.

The independent, third-party audit of the Alcomet AD operation was carried out by TÜV Rheinland Cert GmbH. The audit took place prior to May 31, 2023, thus enabling a Performance Standard V2 certification.

“We warmly congratulate Alcomet AD on achieving full ASI Performance Standard Certification, the first of its kind in Bulgaria. The company’s rolled and extruded products present benefits such as weight reduction in automobiles, corrosion resistance for buildings, and easily recyclable packaging. Its successful transition to full Performance Standard certification status reflects Alcomet’s continuing efforts to improve sustainability outcomes, such as in the recovery and recycling of dross and the establishment of time-bound reduction targets for emissions and wastes.

– Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI

This certification is a recognition of our incessant efforts to establish Alcomet as a socially oriented and environmentally responsible company. Today, the business landscape is increasingly shaped by challenges related to climate change, loss of natural land and biodiversity, social issues, and changing corporate role requirements. Sustainability and ESG agenda are becoming an integral part of business and investment strategies without which further growth is impossible. At Alcomet, in addition to promoting an attitude of sustainability among our employees and implementing sustainable practices in the organization, we also drive change in the industry by working together with our partners to build a sustainable value chain.”

– Huseyin Ince, Executive Board Member of Alcomet
