Activities and Plans
In accordance with our Theory of Change, we are focused on our medium-term outcomes for 2030.
2025-2030 Activities
ASI’s work program flows from ASI’s Strategy. Our current activities are designed to deliver outcomes in three main areas, to support sustainability progress.
Critical mass for sectoral change at scale
Supply chain and investment sector pull are important drivers for improved sustainability performance. Our mission is to drive change at the sectoral level, which means that continued outreach, engagement and uptake are key.
Focus areas:
- Engage with Flat Rolled Product (FRP) consuming segments downstream, to build on existing cohort of supplier Entities with rolling mills (45% of global FRP production is ASI Performance Standard Certified)
- Deepen ASI engagement and impact in regions where we can make a difference in company performance and through Indigenous Peoples Advisory Forum (IPAF) engagement – including Guinea, Brazil, India and Indonesia
- Lean into ASI’s China engagement to continue to underpin global and whole of sector change – as China represents more than 55% of global aluminium production and consumption.
Accessibility of relevant data
Data and transparency are a key horizon challenge for the aluminium – and all – sectors, and flow through other issues by providing critical insights on issues and progress.
Focus areas:
- ASI’s Digital Architecture 2.0: level up ASI’s public facing architecture to deliver stakeholder value, including launch and ongoing development of elementAL 2.0; then Certifications Dashboard 2.0; followed by educationAL 2.0
- Continue to refine ASI’s GHG Method at Entity-level and Product-level; develop framework for carbon-related Claims; integrate Method functions in elementAL 2.0; and enable centralised data on Entity-specific slopes and performance for oversight and analysis
Next generation standards revision + assurance framework
ASI commits to at least a 5 yearly revision cycle to continue to improve our model. The initial 2017 versions launched the ASI Certification program, and the 2022 versions were a step up in expectations. For 2027, we have an opportunity to develop a new generation of voluntary standards system in a changing landscape.
Focus areas:
- Work with ASI’s multi-stakeholder governance to develop and deliver a major update to ASI’s certification program by 2027
- Identify harmonisation opportunities, review materiality and evolving regulation, and find opportunities to structure/streamline for impact
- Create engagement and feedback channels for all interested stakeholders to contribute to the revision process.
