Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that TRIMET has been successfully certified against the ASI Performance Standard for responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium at their recycling operation in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. The recycled aluminium is cast as standard alloys, as well as customer-specific special alloys that are primarily delivered back to the automotive, electrical and mechanical engineering sectors.
The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain. It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Governance, Environment and Social, which address key issues such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions.
The independent, third-party audit of TRIMET’s Gelsenkirchen site was carried out by TÜV NORD CERT GmbH.
Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI said, “We warmly congratulate TRIMET on achieving ASI Certification for the recycling operations at their Gelsenkirchen facility. Aluminium recycling operations are a key part of the circular economy that enable the production of new downstream products with a reduced footprint. TRIMET’s first ASI Certification is an important achievement for this proud family-fun business and their customers.”
Chairman of the Board Philipp Schlüter said, “The certification of our production plant in Gelsenkirchen in accordance with ASI requirements confirms my company’s efforts to further develop sustainable processes and products. Social and ecological responsibility has always been part of TRIMET’s sense of purpose and is also a key guideline for our actions. Sustainability is a decisive competitive factor in the sector. As a raw materials manufacturer, TRIMET has a particular responsibility. With the continuous improvement of environmental standards at our production sites and the climate-friendly production of aluminium, we are also making our contribution to the European Union’s Green Deal and to achieving global climate protection targets.”
