Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that Ulsan Aluminum Limited has been successfully certified against the ASI Performance Standard for responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium. The plant in Ulsan, South Korea produces rolled materials destined for automotive, electronic, construction and packaging sector applications.
The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain. It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Governance, Environment and Social, which address key issues such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions.
The independent, third-party audit of the Ulsan Aluminum Limited plant was carried out by DNV Business Assurance Services UK Ltd.
Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI said, “We warmly congratulate Ulsan Aluminum on achieving ASI Performance Standard Certification for its rolling operations. The company’s aluminium products provide lightweighting benefits in automobiles, corrosion resistance benefits in buildings, and ease of recyclability benefits in packaging applications. The ASI Certification is an important signal to its customers that the plant’s production activities are undertaken in accordance with key sustainability criteria.”
