ASI Working Groups

ASI Working Groups enable participation from all membership classes as well as broader stakeholders and experts to input to the Standards.

What are ASI Working Groups?

Within ASI’s governance model, Working Groups are an important way for members and broader stakeholders, including subject matter specialists, to engage and contribute expertise and perspectives on ASI Standards and broader sustainability priorities. They are not a decision-making body.

Existing Working Groups

The following Working Groups, which reflect ASI’s Sustainability Priorities, have been convened by the Board and Standards Committee to address strategic and technical issues as identified.

  • Climate Change – Drive sector-wide climate change mitigation and adaption within below 1.5C scenario
  • Circularity – Drive circularity: reduce metal losses, design out waste and pollution, regenerate natural systems
  • Nature Positive – Drive nature-positive action on biodiversity, ecosystem services and bauxite mining rehabilitation
  • Human Rights – Drive local action, capacity building and supply chain due diligence to respect human rights
  • Standards Benchmarking and Harmonisation – Enhance collaboration and reduce unnecessary duplication through Standards Benchmarking and Harmonisation

Each Working Group provides:

  • Membership-wide input to the Standards and broader ASI processes (e.g., Assurance, Beyond Certification, Training & Education, Data & research, etc.)
  • Fora for wider discussion across the full aluminium value chain and among a diverse set of stakeholders
  • Early warning of issues to address and identification of emerging longer-term risks, opportunities and initiatives
  • Opportunities for Members to engage in peer knowledge transfer, learning and capacity building.

How are the Working Groups managed?

Working Group meetings may be organized around specific sub-topics to address Standards Committee and Secretariat identified priorities on an ad hoc basis, but may also be arranged to address other needs, such as peer knowledge transfer or information dissemination.

Meetings are held virtually to allow maximum participation.

The ASI Secretariat will maintain attendance and participation records of Working Group participants.

Attendees are expected to adhere to ASI’s Anti-Trust Compliance Policy.

Who can Participate?

All ASI Members (except sitting Board members), IPAF (Indigenous Peoples Advisory Forum), Secretariat and Secretariat-invited experts are welcome to participate. There is no restriction on the number of Working Groups an ASI member company or organisation can join.

More information is available in the Working Groups Terms of Reference
