ASI certifies Yunnan Sunho Aluminum Co. Ltd. against Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Standard

Yunnan Sunho Aluminum Co. Ltd. has achieved ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) and Chain of Custody (CoC) Standard V1 (2017) Certifications for its Wenshan City smelting operation.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that Yunnan Sunho Aluminum Co., Ltd. located in Wenshan City, Yunnan Province (China) has been certified against the ASI Performance Standard and CoC Standard for aluminium smelting. The plant’s annual production capacity is 900,000 tonnes and is based on hydropower energy resources.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain. It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Environment, Social, and Governance, which address key issues such as biodiversity, labour rights, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions. The ASI CoC Standard V1 (2017) sets out requirements for the creation of a Chain of Custody for material that is produced and processed through the value chain into diverse downstream sectors. The implementation of ASI’s CoC Standard links verified practices at successive steps of the supply chain – certified under the ASI Performance Standard – to the products produced by ASI Certified Entities. The CoC Standard also confirms that appropriate policies and due diligence process are in place to identify and address critical issues, such as corruption, human rights abuses, materials originating from conflict-affected and high-risk areas in the supply chain and support responsible sourcing.

The independent, third-party audits of the Yunnan Sunho Aluminum Co., Ltd. facility was carried out by SGS-CSTC Standards Technical Services.
