Vedanta Limited (Aluminium Business) has achieved ASI Chain of Custody (CoC) Standard V2 (2022) Certification for its smelter in the Special Economic Zone in Jharsuguda, Odisha, India. The company’s operations in Jharsuguda comprise of two smelters, three casthouses, and 3615 MW of power generation facilities, and with an annual smelting capacity of 1.8 million tonnes, it is one of the world’s largest single-location Aluminium plants.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that Vedanta Limited (Aluminium Business) has been successfully certified against the ASI CoC Standard V2 (2022). The company achieved Performance Standard V2 Certification for the facility in April 2023, and is the first smelter in India to attain Certification against the Chain of Custody standard. It manufactures and supplies aluminium billets, wire rods, primary foundry alloys (PFA), ingots and sow ingots, including Restora, the company’s range of low carbon aluminium products.

The ASI CoC Standard V2 sets out requirements for the creation of a Chain of Custody for material that is produced and processed through the value chain into diverse downstream sectors. The implementation of ASI’s CoC Standard links verified practices at successive steps of the supply chain – certified under the ASI Performance Standard – to the materials produced by ASI Certified Entities. The CoC Standard also confirms that appropriate policies and due diligence processes are in place to identify and address critical issues, such as corruption, human rights abuses, materials originating from conflict-affected and high-risk areas in the supply chain and support responsible sourcing.

The independent, third-party audit of the Vedanta Limited (Aluminium Business) smelter was carried out by CETIZION Verifica. A full listing of audit findings outlining evidence of conformances and minor non-conformance is available from page 5 of the summary audit report, linked below. Four minor non-conformances were noted under Criteria 5.2 Unique Identification, 7.1d Responsible Sourcing Policy (Conflict-affected and high-risk areas), 7.2 Risk Assessment and Mitigation and 9.3b Sustainability Data (optional) – Origin information. Vedanta Limited (Aluminium Business) will be implementing a corrective action plan, the implementation of which will be verified in follow-up audits.

“We congratulate Vedanta Limited (Aluminium Business) on achieving Certification against ASI CoC Standard V2 at their Jharsuguda Smelter. The certification demonstrates Vedanta’s efforts towards implementing responsible sourcing practices and is complementary to their Performance Standard (V2) Certification, which provides a pathway for continuous improvement of their sustainability performance.”

– Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI

“We welcome the Chain of Custody Certification for our SEZ-based operations in Jharsuguda, the first in India to achieve this mark of operational excellence. Following on the ASI Performance Standard Certifications for our plants in Jharsuguda and BALCO, it comes as a significant reiteration of our commitment to undertaking responsible operations. At Vedanta Aluminium, we are focused on integrating and encouraging sustainable practices within every stage of the aluminium value chain, and through this effort, fully explore the limitless potential of the ‘Metal of the Future’ in building a greener tomorrow.”
