Aluminium Stewardship Initiative certifies Hydro Aluminium Rolled Products operations against ASI Chain of Custody Standard
Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that Hydro Aluminium Rolled Products – including smelting, re-melting, and casting operations – has been successfully certified against its Chain of Custody Standard. Through its Rolled Products business area, Hydro is one of the world´s leading manufacturer of technically advanced rolled aluminium solutions, producing among others applications for the automotive and packaging industry as well as the print and building & construction sector. The same operations just achieved certification to ASI’s Performance Standard in March this year.
The ASI CoC Standard sets out requirements for the creation of a Chain of Custody for material that is produced and processed through the value chain into diverse downstream sectors. The implementation of ASI’s CoC Standard links verified practices at successive steps of the supply chain – certified under the ASI Performance Standard – to the products produced by ASI Certified Entities. Hydro’s CoC Certification includes scrap re-melting and casthouse operations, thus enabling Hydro to produce ASI certified aluminium.
The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The independent, third-party audits of the Rolled Products operations were carried out by DNV GL.
Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI said “In the past months, Hydro has shown determined leadership in its efforts to achieve ASI Certification for its operations. This is a testament to Hydro’s corporate commitment to sustainability across their business areas, and to Hydro’s staff, who are the driving force getting the work done on the ground. After already certifying 9 operations to the ASI Performance Standard, the ability to offer their customers ASI certified aluminium having achieved CoC certification is another great milestone.”
Einar Glomnes, Executive Vice President Rolled Products, says: “We are happy and proud to be certified against the Chain of Custody Standards by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative, which enable us to offer certified aluminium to our customers. This is an important milestone for Hydro on our ambitious sustainability agenda, and in our strategy to help our customers document that they offer aluminium products that are sourced and produced responsibly throughout the entire value-chain”.
