Aluminium Stewardship Initiative certifies Hydro Primary Metal operations against ASI Performance Standard

Hydro extends their ASI Performance Standard Certified operations with Primary Metal operations including the aluminium smelting, re-melting/refining and casthouse activities at the production sites Clervaux (Luxembourg), Høyanger (Norway), Karmøy (Norway), Sunndal (Norway) and Årdal (Norway).

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that Hydro Aluminium Primary Metal operations, sites in Luxembourg and Norway have been successfully certified against the ASI Performance Standard. With the certification of the Primary Aluminium business area, Hydro extends its certified operations to 13 production sites, from primary metal, smelting/re-melting and casting through to extruding and rolling, and now has the most ASI Performance Standard certified operations of the ASI membership.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The independent, third-party audits of the Primary Metal operations were carried out by DNV GL.

Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI said “Hydro has been a driving force within the ASI since our initial development stages and continues to play an important role in the implementation phase, not only in its demonstrated commitment to certify its operations, but also in its ongoing engagement in ASI’s standards development and governance activities. We congratulate Hydro on their latest certifications, and look forward to touring the newly Performance Standard certified Sunndal smelter during ASI’s upcoming Annual General Meeting in Norway in early June.”

Pål Kildemo, Head of Primary Metal in Hydro, says “I am very happy about five of Hydro’s Primary Metal plants now being certified according to ASI’s Performance Standard, an important verification that our aluminium is produced by high standards, responsibly and sustainably. We see a strategic fit between our sustainability agenda and our commercial agenda, and the ASI certification as an important step on the way”.
