Logan Aluminum has achieved ASI Performance Standard Certification for remelting, recycling, casting, hot mill rolling, cold mill rolling, and coil finishing activities at the Logan Aluminum facility in Russellville, Kentucky, USA. Logan Aluminum is a joint-venture of two ASI Members, Novelis and Tri-Arrows Aluminum.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that Logan Aluminum has been successfully certified against ASI Performance Standard for responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium. Logan Aluminum produces aluminium sheet products primarily for the beverage can and automotive markets, with used beverage cans and other light gauge or thin aluminium scrap as part of the feedstock. The Russelville, Kentucky plant is the largest single can sheet facility in North America, supplying over 45% of the North American can market.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain. It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Governance, Environment and Social, which address key issues such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions.

The independent, third-party audit of the Logan Aluminum facilities was carried out by DNV Business Assurance Services UK Ltd.

Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI said, “ASI congratulates Logan Aluminum on achieving Performance Standard Certification for its rolling operation in Kentucky, USA. This plant is an important node in the circular economy of the North American market, with the capacity to recycle more than 340,000 tonnes of aluminium scrap and produce over 900,000 tonnes of new rolled aluminium products annually. We are pleased to see ASI Members collaborating to show sustainability leadership in the industry by achieving ASI Certification at key joint-venture operations, such as this.”

Van Mitchell, Business Unit Manager said, “Logan Aluminum is committed to advancing sustainability, not only within our own manufacturing processes, but also throughout the larger supply chains by improving circularity and environmental stewardship. To that end, we joined the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative, along with a number of our valued customers and industry peers. Our achievement of ASI Performance Standard Certification is an important milestone of our sustainability journey that underscores our drive to foster responsible production and sourcing of aluminum and contributing to the critical demand for sustainable aluminum products.”
