The ASI Governance and People Committee has a minimum composition of half the Board – one from each membership class (Production and Transformation, Industrial User and Civil Society) and one Independent director. The Board may also choose to appoint up to one external individual with appropriate qualifications to the Committee (including as a potential pipeline for future Directors).

This week, the ASI Board appointed Anders Blom to the Governance Committee as the first such appointment, marking another step forward in ASI’s commitment to respectful engagement with rightsholders. Anders brings a wealth of senior leadership experience to ASI’s governance, including 20 years of involvement in the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) with commitment to Indigenous issues in general and Sami Indigenous issues in particular. He has been engaging with the aluminium sector through ASI’s Indigenous Peoples Advisory Forum (IPAF) since 2023. In IPAF, he represents the Norwegian Indigenous organization Protect Sápmi. Within the framework of the collaboration with ASI, he has written an English manual on how to carry out cumulative impact assessments with the participation of Indigenous people, IPCIA. He has also been the lead writer for developing two guidance documents regarding FPIC on behalf of ASI.

Within FSC, Anders has participated in the national organizations, board and standard committees, for Sweden and Norway, and at the international level. For 7 years, he was one of the founding members of the FSC’s Permanent Indigenous Peoples Committee, PIPC, later transitioning to chairing the FSC Indigenous Foundation. He continues to be part of FSC’s standards committee in Norway as well as review committees in both Sweden and Norway.

ASI CEO Fiona Solomon says “We have deeply valued our dialogues and projects with Anders over the last few years, which interface with complex issues facing rightsholders and supply chains. We warmly welcome Anders to his new role on the Governance and People Committee and look forward to his continued and expanded contributions through ASI’s governance.”

Anders Blom says “I feel honoured by the trust the Board has shown in me through this appointment, and look forward to a constructive collaboration with ASI on the issues that fall within the Committee’s area of expertise and decision-making.”
