Alcoa has achieved ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) Certification at its Poços de Caldas, Brazil operations. The activities at the site include bauxite mining, alumina refining, aluminium remelting and casting of ingots and billets, as well as the production of aluminium powder.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that Alcoa has been successfully certified against the ASI Performance Standard V2 at its bauxite mine, alumina refinery and casthouse operations in Poços de Caldas, Brazil. The facility’s billet production integrates pre-consumer recycled scrap content and it is the only Alcoa operation worldwide that produces aluminium powder.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain. It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Governance, Environment and Social, which address key issues such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions.

The independent, third-party audits of the Alcoa operations was carried out by DNV Business Assurance Services UK Ltd.

“ASI warmly congratulates Alcoa on achieving Performance Standard Certification at its Poços de Caldas operations. Sustainability is an ongoing journey that constantly challenges companies to improve and adapt.  For example, at the Poços de Caldas site, Alcoa has started implementing press filtration technology for bauxite residue from alumina refining, to reduce water and land use and increase geotechnical stability of residue areas.  The ASI Certification process seeks to encourage and acknowledge innovation and improvement across a wide range of sustainability issues for the aluminium value chain.”

– Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI

“This certification marks an important milestone in our efforts to ensure that all of our Brazilian operations adhere to the highest sustainability standards. It demonstrates our commitment to our stakeholders that we always strive to operate safely, with protection of the environment and respect for people, and to produce products that will create a more sustainable future.”

– Otavio Carvalheira, Alcoa’s President of Brazil and Vice President of Operations.
