Aleris Aluminum Duffel has achieved ASI Chain of Custody Standard Certification for aluminium refining/remelting, casting and semi-fabrication activities undertaken at its production facilities in Duffel, Belgium. The plant’s outputs include aluminium sheet and coil destined for applications in the automotive, building and construction, and other sectors.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that Aleris Aluminum Duffel has been successfully certified against the ASI Chain of Custody Standard for its operations in Belgium. The facility supplies aluminium sheet and coil to customers in various sectors, including applications in automotive, building and construction, commercial transportation, heat exchangers, industrial products and packaging. Aleris Aluminum Duffel achieved ASI Performance Standard certification in July 2019.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI CoC Standard sets out requirements for the creation of a Chain of Custody for material that is produced and processed through the value chain into diverse downstream sectors. The implementation of ASI’s CoC Standard links verified practices at successive steps of the supply chain – certified under the ASI Performance Standard – to the products produced by ASI Certified Entities.

The independent, third-party audit of the Aleris Aluminum Duffel plant was carried out by Bureau Veritas Certification.

Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI said, “We warmly congratulate Aleris Aluminum Duffel on their ASI Chain of Custody Certification. Aleris has supported ASI’s vision from the outset, and we are pleased to see that the company now has both ASI Certifications and the possibility to offer its customers ASI-certified products, given the appropriate upstream sourcing. Aleris’ commitment to sustainability in the aluminium value chain is important, considering its reach into several key downstream sectors.”

“We are extremely proud of this achievement and my compliments go out to the entire team, who despite the Covid-19 restrictions and an ownership transition, stayed laser-focussed on keeping sustainability our top priority. As a founding member of ASI we share the view that ASI certification is the future standard for our industry and we are looking forward to shipping the first ASI-certified material to our customers in the coming days,” Andreas Gondorf, VP Sales & Marketing Aleris Aluminum Duffel said.
