ALRO has achieved ASI Performance Standard V3 (2022) Certification for its ALRO S.A. operations in Slatina, Romania. This is the first Certification against the updated Performance Standard V3 issued to a Europe-based facility. ALRO is the only producer of primary aluminium and aluminium alloys in Romania, and operates the largest smelter in Central and Eastern Europe.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that ALRO has been certified against the ASI Performance Standard V3 for the manufacture and sale of aluminium alloy slabs, billets, wire rod, plates and sheets obtained by casting, hot rolling, homogenization, heat treatment, mechanical processing, finishing, and testing. Additional activities in the certification scope of this vertically integrated operation include alumina refining and aluminium recycling. The Slatina, Romania operations have an annual production capacity of 265,000 tpa of electrolytic aluminium, 47,000 tpa of secondary aluminium, 332,000 tpa of primary aluminium cast products. The current flat rolled products production capacity is 90,000 tpa with an expansion programme now underway.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard V3 (2022) was launched in May 2022 following a multi-year revision process, which was undertaken to update and extend the Standard’s criteria to meet the growing urgency of global environmental challenges, as well as aluminium sector stakeholders’ increasing expectations around key sustainability issues. It defines 11 principles and 62 criteria under three sustainability pillars – Environment, Social, and Governance – with the aim to address pressing sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain, such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, circularity, and greenhouse gas emissions.

The independent, third-party audit of ALRO S.A. was carried out by DQS CFS.

“We warmly congratulate ALRO on achieving ASI Performance Standard V3 (2022), the first against the updated Standard for a facility in Europe. Achieving ASI Certification is an important commitment for a vertically integrated operation, as additional Standard criteria are applicable to specific supply chain activities. This, coupled with the broader and more stringent criteria included in the updated Performance Standard V3, makes ALRO’s certification a milestone achievement.”

– Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI

“This prestigious certification from ASI confirms our sustainability progress over the past years. Our focus on sustainable business practices started more than 20 years ago when we invested massively in state-of-the-art equipment and energy efficiency to improve our operations. Starting in 2017, we have been reporting our sustainability performance voluntarily through a Consolidated Sustainability Report. Moreover, in 2021 we published a Sustainability Strategy for 2021-2025. Several awards recognized our progress as our Sustainability Report is considered one of the best on the Romanian Capital Market.”

– Marian NĂSTASE, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ALRO
