ASI certifies Aluminerie Alouette plant against ASI Performance Standard
Aluminerie Alouette has achieved ASI Performance Standard certification for its operations in Sept-Îles, Quebec, Canada. The plant has an annual capacity of 600,000 tonnes of primary aluminium and is the largest smelter in the Americas.
Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that Aluminerie Alouette has been successfully certified against the ASI Performance Standard for responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium. The certification scope covers the facility’s aluminium smelting, casthouse and operational activities conducted at the Alouette facilities in Sept-Îles, Quebec.
The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain. It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Governance, Environment and Social, which address key issues such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions. The independent, third-party audit of the Aluminerie Alouette plant was carried out by BNQ.
Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI said, “We congratulate Aluminerie Alouette on its ASI Performance Standard certification. This certification is significant not only due to the company’s annual production capacity, but also because the consortium behind the company includes several certified ASI Members, further demonstrating the great collaborative spirit of our Members to create a responsible aluminium value chain.”
Michel Huot, President and Chief Executive Officer of Aluminerie Alouette, stated that this certification, valid for three years, demonstrates that the aluminum produced in Sept-Îles meets the principles of sustainable development, adding that “Alouette has always subscribed to the principles of sustainable development, an integral part of its mission statement. The daily commitment of all employees helps maintain world-class results, particularly in environmental matters. Once again, Alouette is proud to be among the world leaders in this regard.
