Ball Aerosol Packaging has achieved ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) and Chain of Custody V1 (2017) Certification at nine global manufacturing facilities and two regional headquarters. Ball’s Aerosol division offers aluminium packaging solutions in the personal care, household and beverage packaging categories, including a range of impact extruded single and multi-use aluminum bottles, as well as aerosol containers.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that Ball Aerosol Packaging has been certified against the ASI Performance and Chain of Custody Standards. The certifications cover management activities for centralized operational functions, global support functions, quality assurance and operational risk conducted at the regional headquarters in Westminster, Colorado (USA) and Lille (France), as well as all nine of Ball’s manufacturing plants, aerosol packaging and slugs, worldwide: Velim in Czechia, Bellegarde and Copal in France, Devizes in the UK, Ahmedabad in India, Verona in the US, Sherbrooke in Canada, Itupeva in Brasil and San Luis Potosi in Mexico. The company produces over 1 billion aluminium aerosol cans every year.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain. It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Environment, Social, and Governance, which address key issues such as biodiversity, labour rights, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions. The ASI CoC Standard sets out requirements for the creation of a Chain of Custody for material that is produced and processed through the value chain into diverse downstream sectors. The implementation of ASI’s CoC Standard links verified practices at successive steps of the supply chain – certified under the ASI Performance Standard – to the products produced by ASI Certified Entities.

The independent, third-party audits of the Ball Aerosol Packaging operations were carried out by Bureau Veritas Certification.

“We congratulate Ball Aerosol Packaging for achieving ASI Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Standard certifications at these nine global manufacturing facilities and two regional headquarters. When consumers think of aluminium product packaging the focus is often on beverage cans, but the same strategies and policies equally apply to managing the ESG impacts of aerosol cans. Ball Aerosol Packaging’s dual ASI Certification, coupled with appropriate upstream sourcing, can help its customers’ brands address consumers’ expectations for products that are responsibly produced and work towards global sustainability challenges.”

– Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI

“Achieving ASI certification demonstrates our commitment to sustainability and is the result of a rigorous process. Infinitely recyclable aluminum packaging is a prime example of material circularity where resources stay in the system, reducing impacts on the environment. Our aluminum aerosol business’ sustainability efforts showcase what can be achieved through material and emissions reduction goal setting, innovation and, especially, partnership with customers.”

– Jay Billings, President at Ball Aerosol Packaging

“ASI guarantees the highest sustainability standards throughout the entire aluminium value chain – from mining through refining, smelting, manufacturing and product use, up to end-of-life management and recycling. It enables the aluminium industry to clearly demonstrate responsibility and provide independent and credible assurance of performance.”

– Predrag Ozmo, Sustainability Director at Ball Aerosol Packaging
