Foma S.p.A has achieved ASI Performance Standard V3.1 (2023) with Provisional status for the production of aluminium die cast and machined components for the automotive industry at their facilities located in Pralboino, Italy.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that Foma S.p.A has been certified against the ASI Performance Standard V3.1 with Provisional status. The Certification covers the Pralboino site, which serves as the main die casting foundry producing aluminium components for structural, safety and performance applications in the automotive industry. The operations span the full aluminium casting process including mould design, die casting, mechanical machining and final assembly.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard V3 and ASI CoC Standard V2 were launched in May 2022 following a multi-year revision process. The ASI Performance Standard V3 defines 11 principles and 62 criteria under three sustainability pillars – Environment, Social, and Governance – with the aim to address pressing sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain, such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, circularity, and greenhouse gas emissions. The 2022 Standards and related documents underwent a minor update in 2023, accounting for editorial changes, correction of minor errors and for general clarification, culminating in the release of Performance Standard V3.1 (2023) and Chain of Custody Standard V2.1 (2023).

The Provisional Certification serves as a strategic and flexible approach for aluminium sector actors to gain access to ASI’s sustainability standards framework, learn, and improve their practices over a defined period. It provides an opportunity for Members to commence their ASI Certification journey, while requiring a commitment to move towards Full Certification as soon as is practically possible.

The independent, third-party audit of Foma S.p.A was carried out by Bureau Veritas Certification. A full listing of audit findings is available in the summary audit reports, linked below. Eight minor non-conformances were noted under Criteria 1.3a-e Code of Conduct, 2.4a-e Responsible Sourcing, 5.1a-b Disclosure of GHG Emissions and Energy Use, 5.4 GHG Emissions Management, 6.2a-g Discharges to Water, 6.5a-c Waste Management and Reporting, 9.2a-e Gender Equity and Women’s Empowerment and 11.1a Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Management System. Two major non-conformances were identified under Criteria 5.3a GHG Emissions Reduction Plans and 5.3b-e GHG Emissions Reduction Plans, resulting in a Certification with Provisional status of one year. Foma S.p.A will be implementing corrective actions, to be verified in a follow-up audit. Bureau Veritas Certification approved the corrective action plans for the Major non-conformances prior to submission of the audit report to ASI.
