ASI certifies Mozal SA against Performance Standard (Provisional)
Mozal SA has achieved ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) Certification with Provisional status at its Maputo smelting operation and related port facilities. This is not only the first ASI Certification in the country of Mozambique, but also the first certification of an ASI Production and Transformation Member in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that Mozal SA has been certified against the ASI Performance Standard with Provisional status. The aluminium smelter just outside the capital, Maputo, is a major industrial operation in Mozambique, operated by South32, and has an annual production of over a half a million tonnes.
The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain. It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Environment, Social, and Governance, which address key issues such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions.
The independent, third-party audit of the Mozal SA operation and related port operations was carried out by TÜV Rheinland Cert GmbH.
