Mozal SA has achieved ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) Certification with Provisional status at its Maputo smelting operation and related port facilities. This is not only the first ASI Certification in the country of Mozambique, but also the first certification of an ASI Production and Transformation Member in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that Mozal SA has been certified against the ASI Performance Standard with Provisional status. The aluminium smelter just outside the capital, Maputo, is a major industrial operation in Mozambique, operated by South32, and has an annual production of over a half a million tonnes.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain. It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Environment, Social, and Governance, which address key issues such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions.

The independent, third-party audit of the Mozal SA operation and related port operations was carried out by TÜV Rheinland Cert GmbH.

“We congratulate Mozal on achieving ASI Performance Standard Certification with Provisional status at its Maputo smelting operation. The Mozal smelter opened in 2000 and is the largest industrial employer in the country. Its ASI Certification demonstrates the company’s commitment to pursue responsible production practices, and provides a platform and direction for continuous improvement.”

Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI

“We are pleased to receive certification from the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI). ASI certification is an important step in supporting responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium across the value chain. This forms part of our strategy to deliver on international ESG performance standards.”

Samuel Samo Gudo, Vice President Operations at MOZAL SA
