Novelis do Brasil LTDA. has achieved ASI Chain of Custody (CoC) Standard V1 (2017) Certification for its Pindamonhangaba rolling operations, as well as for its network of 14 aluminium can collection centers throughout Brazil and 1 distribution center. The plant at Pindamonhangaba is one of the world’s largest integrated sites dedicated to beverage can recycling and aluminium rolled products. Its annual production volume is approximately 694,000 tonnes of aluminum sheet, primarily destined for use as beverage packaging.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that Novelis do Brasil LTDA. has been successfully certified against the ASI Chain of Custody Standard at the Pindamonhangaba rolling facility and its recycling collection centers throughout Brasil (Cariacica Distribution Center and the Collection Centers at: Ananindeua, Bauru, Brasília, Campinas, Curitiba, Juiz de Fora, Parnamirim, Pindamonhangaba, Recife, João Pessoa, São Paulo, Sertãozinho, Salvador, São Gonçalo). The recycling and rolling operations at Pindamonhangaba, Brazil achieved Performance Standard Certification in October 2021, while the 14 aluminium recycling collection centers and distribution center were then added to that Certification via a scope change audit in June 2022.

The ASI CoC Standard sets out requirements for the creation of a Chain of Custody for material that is produced and processed through the value chain into diverse downstream sectors. The implementation of ASI’s CoC Standard links verified practices at successive steps of the supply chain – certified under the ASI Performance Standard – to the products produced by ASI Certified Entities. The CoC Standard also confirms that appropriate policies and due diligence process are in place to identify and address critical issues, such as corruption, human rights abuses, materials originating from conflict-affected and high-risk areas in the supply chain and support responsible sourcing.

The independent, third-party audit of the Novelis do Brasil LTDA. Pindamonhangaba facility and 14 recycling collection centers and the distribution center was carried out by DNV Business Assurance Services UK Ltd.

“We congratulate Novelis do Brasil LTDA. on achieving ASI CoC Certification for its Pindamonhangaba rolling operation and network of aluminium can collection centers in Brazil. The company’s system comprising the recycling and rolling facility and collection centers, combined with Brazil’s world leading aluminium can recycling rate of 98.7% , makes this a prime example of a circular economy in action. The company’s dual ASI Certification expands Novelis’ leading efforts in the responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium.”

– Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI
