ASI certifies South32 Worsley Alumina against Performance Standard V3
The operation includes the Boddington Bauxite Mine and Alumina Refinery in Collie, and associated infrastructure, such as conveyors and the Bunbury port.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that South32 Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd has been certified against the ASI Performance Standard V3 (2022). The facilities include the Boddington Bauxite Mine producing approximately 18.8 million tonnes of bauxite ore annually, and the Alumina Refinery in Collie producing 4.6 million tonnes of alumina annually, as well as associated infrastructure, such as conveyors and the Bunbury port.
The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard V3 (2022) was launched in May 2022 following a multi-year revision process. It defines 11 principles and 62 criteria under three sustainability pillars – Environment, Social, and Governance – with the aim to address pressing sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain, such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples’ rights, circularity, and greenhouse gas emissions.
The independent, third-party audit of the South32 Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd facilities was carried out by KPMG Australia. Fifteen minor non-conformances are noted under Criteria 2.6a-h Human Rights Impact Assessment, 2.8a-d Suspended Operations, 5.3a-e GHG Emissions Reduction Plans, 8.1b Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Risk and Impact Assessment – Priority, 8.3a-c Management of Priority Ecosystem Services, 8.7a-i Mine Rehabilitation, 9.1a-d Human Rights Due Diligence, 9.2a-e Gender Equity and Women’s Empowerment, 9.3a-i Indigenous Peoples, 9.4a Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) – New Projects or Major Changes, 9.4b Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) – Bauxite Mining, 9.4c Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) – Demonstrate support, 9.5b Cultural and Sacred Heritage – Impacts, 9.7a-h Affected Populations and Organisations and 11.1b-e Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Management System – Reviews and disclosure. During the Certification Period, South32 Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd will be implementing a corrective action plan, which will be verified in follow-up audits.
