ASI has released the report “Drivers, Benefits and Challenges of ASI Membership and Certification: ASI Certification Survey 2024”. The analysis summarises feedback from 46 ASI Members that achieved initial Certification or Recertification against the ASI Performance Standard and/or Chain of Custody Standard between 1 January and 31 December 2024 (~ 46% response rate).

Since 2021, ASI has surveyed newly or re-certified Members each year to understand their motivations for Certification, the value they see, the challenges they encounter, and how Certification is influencing business practices over time.

Key takeaways – Drivers

For Performance Standard Certification, the top drivers remain:

  • Meeting customer expectations
  • Demonstrating responsible business practices
  • Gaining a competitive advantage

For Chain of Custody Certification, the most common drivers are

  • Customer requests and
  • Implementation of responsible sourcing.

Key takeaways – Value, improvements and challenges

Perceived value of ASI Certifiction remains very high: over 90% of respondents agree that ASI Certification is positive for their business. Around four in five report that Certification has led to, or is driving, changes and improvements in business practices.

At the same time, respondents highlight mainly operational challenges: internal resourcing for audit planning, access to Accredited Auditing Firms, costs, and the usability of ASI’s assurance platform (elementAl). Around half also report some overlap with other standards (such as ISO management system standards) and call for clearer recognition to reduce duplication. Most respondents felt they received sufficient support from ASI, while suggesting more implementation-focused training, case studies and platform improvements.
