Strengthening ASI through stakeholder feedback
The Governance Survey helps ensure that ASI’s governance continues to evolve in response to the needs and experiences of its multi-stakeholder membership.

Strong governance relies on listening, learning and adapting. Each year, ASI conducts a Governance Survey to better understand how its governance structures, decision-making processes and member engagement are performing, and where improvements can be made.
The survey is distributed to ASI Directors, Standards Committee members, ASI Members and the Secretariat. Participants are invited to provide confidential feedback on a wide range of topics, including governance effectiveness, member engagement, communications, meetings and strategic priorities. To encourage open and constructive participation, responses are analysed and reported only in aggregated and highly generalised form, ensuring individual anonymity.
The Governance Survey has become an important component of ASI’s continual improvement approach. Participation continued to strengthen across all ASI governance constituencies in 2024, with response rates ranging from 35% to 75% across the different membership categories, compared with 14% to 38% in 2023 and 33% to 39% in 2022. While higher participation remains an ongoing objective, ASI also recognises that Members provide feedback through a wide range of meetings, Working Groups and other engagement channels throughout the year.
Across all three survey cycles, feedback has been consistently positive and constructive, with practical suggestions that have directly informed ASI’s continuous improvement efforts.
- 2022: Members highlighted the need to improve elementAL, reinforcing the importance of ASI’s subsequent investment in its digital ecosystem and assurance platform.
- 2023: Feedback emphasised greater opportunities for sharing implementation experience, more regional face-to-face engagement, and additional training materials to support implementation of complex Standard requirements.
- 2024: Members identified opportunities to further strengthen engagement in webinars, Working Groups, the AGM and governance meetings, provided valuable input to the ongoing Standards Revision and elementAL redevelopment, and encouraged continued improvements in communications to better meet the diverse needs of ASI’s membership.
These insights have helped strengthen member engagement, improve communications, support governance processes, guide digital platform development and contribute to Standards revisions and other organisational initiatives. Survey findings are shared with ASI Members as part of the Annual General Meeting reporting package, enabling participants to see how their feedback contributes to organisational learning and continual improvement.
The Governance Survey forms one part of a broader dialogue between ASI and its Members, complemented by Working Groups, governance meetings, webinars, the Annual General Meeting and regular engagement with the Secretariat. Together with ASI’s wider Data & Research programme, the survey helps ensure that ASI’s governance continues to evolve in response to the needs and experiences of its multi-stakeholder membership.
