The latest Circularity Working Group (CWG) meeting focused on advancing outcome-based criteria for optimising the use of post-consumer scrap in alloys for product manufacturing under Criterion 4.4 of the Performance Standards. Discussions addressed challenges in differentiating pre- and post-consumer scrap and inconsistencies in standards for scrap and carbon accounting. Members explored how various sectors, such as automotive, construction and packaging, face unique recycling challenges due to differences in material compositions, alloy requirements, products lifetime, and end-of-life processing. The group also discussed the potential of digital technologies to improve material traceability and enable more effective circular strategies. The group agreed to develop a working paper outlining best practices and metrics for enhanced post-consumer scrap integration.
REMEMBER!
The CWG has introduced an anonymous questionnaire to evaluate mine closure and rehabilitation practices among member organisations. This aims to assess the integration of circular economy principles in closure activities, covering aspects such as legacy management and stakeholder engagement. Please complete the questionnaire by 18 October 2024.
Alternatively, members preferring a direct conversation can schedule an interview with the ASI Secretariat by contacting Gabriel Carmona gabriel@aluminium-stewardship.org. We want to hear all voices on this key topic for the sector!
