In the last Circularity Working Group (CWG) meeting, the focus was on outcome-based strategies for managing and utilising bauxite residue. The group examined how existing technologies, such as dry stacking and dry tailings backfill, are being implemented across various operations, considering both their environmental impacts and their potential role in supporting circularity goals. Attention was given to the effectiveness of these approaches in mitigating environmental risks while also identifying ongoing challenges in increasing material reuse. The CWG plans to explore additional innovative reuse initiatives and assess the feasibility of setting broader utilisation targets for the industry. These discussions will continue in the next meeting, scheduled for November.

The CWG has also introduced an anonymous questionnaire to evaluate current mine closure and rehabilitation practices among member organisations. The questionnaire is designed to assess how circular economy principles are being integrated into these processes, addressing areas such as legacy management and stakeholder involvement. Members are invited to complete the questionnaire, available at: https://forms.gle/eqqwKk2Z8Zn6CTzP6, by 18th October 2024. Alternatively, members who prefer a direct conversation may arrange an interview with the ASI Secretariat by contacting Gabriel Carmona (gabriel@aluminium-stewardship.org).
