ASI certifies Gulkula Mining Company Pty Ltd facility against ASI Performance Standard
Gulkula is the first Indigenous owned and operated bauxite mine to achieve ASI Certification.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that Gulkula Mining Company has been successfully certified against the ASI Performance Standard with a provisional status. Commencing operations in 2017, Gulkula today delivers all stages of the bauxite mining process. Yolngu participation across all stages of the mining process is important for the capability development of Gulkula, from drilling and testing through to mine rehabilitation that brings the land back to its original landscape and to the requirements of its Traditional Owners.
The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain. It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Governance, Environment and Social, which address key issues such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions. The independent, third-party audits of Gulkula’s bauxite mine was carried out by DNV GL.

The provisional status shows that the company is well on its way to achieving a full certification in the very near future.”
