Understanding the perception of local and rural communities in bauxite mining regions in Guinea: Research project outcomes
The research titled “Understanding the perception of Local and rural communities in bauxite mining regions – A compilation of research results from Guinea” was completed in April 2023.

To better understand the context of bauxite mining in Guinea and the perceptions of local and rural communities, ASI undertook a research activity in Guinea’s Kindia and Boké areas from April 19 to June 05, 2022. The research titled “Understanding the perception of Local and rural communities in bauxite mining regions – A compilation of research results from Guinea” was completed in April 2023. The research results have been analysed and summarised in a document that includes community perceptions on Seeking Communities Consent, Community Knowledge of FPIC, Legitimate representation and other related topics that have been shared with the research participants in the local and rural communities. The research outcomes will be published during the month of July on the ASI IPAF web page.
An essential part of the research included disseminating the results to the participants in the local and regional communities. To this end, a workshop with six Indigenous Peoples Advisory Forum (IPAF) members from the Kindia and Boké regions with Dr Penda Diallo (ASI Qualitative Research Manager) took place in Conakry during May 18-19, 2023.
The objectives of the two-day workshop with IPAF representatives from Guinea were to share research findings, gain feedback from IPAF members, prepare IPAF members to support ASI in disseminating research findings across communities and stakeholders that participated in the research, and build the capacity of participants to disseminate the research findings effectively. Participants engaged in a passionate discussion sharing their feedback on a set of posters detailing the research findings, their experiences and their appreciation for the depth and time invested in the study. Participants also received some training from Dr Diallo on qualitative research and dissemination approaches.
All participants welcomed the research activities, the workshop and the opportunity for further exchanges and shared learning. ASI engaged with the participants for the dissemination phase and shared more news and information regarding the dissemination in our following newsletter.
