About Nera (Smit Tanning B.V.)

Nera (Smit Tanning B.V.) is a subsidiary of Royal Smit & Zoon, a family company founded in 1821. Royal Smit & Zoon develops and produces sustainable chemical solutions for the leather industry and has grown into a worldwide renowned player. Our ambition is to create a more sustainable leather value chain together. Globally, Royal Smit & Zoon has over 400 employees. Our headquarters is in Weesp, the Netherlands and we have offices in Germany, Italy, China, India, and Mexico. Since 2020 Royal Smit & Zoon is also providing sustainable tanning solutions, under the subsidiary Nera. With the product Zeology, we support leather manufacturers to produce sustainable leather for automotive, aviation, public transportation, footwear, leather goods, sportswear, furniture and fine materials such as gloves and garments, anywhere in the world.

We highly value ASI’s efforts to drive responsible production, sourcing and stewardship in the global aluminium value chain. These efforts perfectly align with Royal Smit & Zoon’s and Nera’s mission. Producing Zeology based on ASI certified bauxite safeguards many aspects towards our long term ESG goals, creating a socially and environmentally sustainable leather value chain.
