Novelis has achieved ASI Performance Standard certification with Provisional status for remelting, casting and rolling activities at the Voerde and Koblenz sites in Germany. Novelis Europe has also expanded its Chain of Custody scope to include these sites. The new Performance Standard certifications and expanded Chain of Custody Standard certification scope means that all of Novelis’ European production facilities are now certified to both of ASI’s Standards.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that Novelis has been successfully certified against the ASI Performance Standard for responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium at their remelting and casting facility at Voerde, Germany, as well as its aluminium rolling facility at Koblenz, Germany. The plants have received Provisional Certification under the ASI Interim Policy regarding Audits, Audit-Related Travel and Coronavirus, which clarifies the reasonable accommodations that can be made to audit plans in consideration of the current COVID-19 situation. These plants have also been added to Novelis’ Chain of Custody Standard certification scope.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain. It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Governance, Environment and Social, which address key issues such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions.

The independent, third-party audits of the Novelis sites were carried out by SZI GmbH. The audits have been undertaken as a ‘desktop’ exercise with a remote review of relevant documentation. Some criteria requiring on-site evaluation by the auditor will be evaluated when an on-site audit can be scheduled.

Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI said, “We congratulate Novelis on achieving Europe-wide ASI Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Standard Certifications, a further demonstration of the company’s strong commitment to sustainability. We are pleased to see Novelis’ major contribution toward increasing the volume of ASI-certified aluminium and helping to inspire other manufacturers and customers to achieve the same standards.”

“With total European shipments of more than 1.000 kt and recycled material input of more than 600 kt per year, Novelis is a major contributor to shaping the European aluminium industry,” said Emilio Braghi, Executive Vice President, Novelis Inc. & President, Novelis Europe. “All of our facilities in Europe have now been independently certified to comply to ASI Standards in manufacturing and recycling aluminium, demonstrating that the sustainable aluminium solutions we provide to our customers are responsibly sourced and produced. In line with our purpose of shaping a sustainable world together, we strive to motivate our partners, customers and suppliers to join and implement responsible practices throughout the whole value chain.”
