Alcoa has achieved ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) Certification at its joint-venture smelter in Portland, Victoria, Australia. The facility’s main outputs include ingots and primary die casting alloys, produced from primary and secondary aluminium inputs.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that Alcoa has been certified against the ASI Performance Standard for its smelting and casting operations at Portland, Victoria, Australia. Portland Aluminium is an unincorporated joint venture between Alcoa of Australia Limited, CITIC Nominees Pty Ltd., and a subsidiary of ASI Member Marubeni (Marubeni Aluminium Australia Pty Ltd.), while Alcoa of Australia Limited is owned by Alcoa Corporation and ASI Member Alumina Limited. The site has a total consolidated capacity of 358,000 metric tons per year.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain. It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Environment, Social, and Governance, which address key issues such as biodiversity, labour rights, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions.

The independent, third-party audits of Alcoa Portland Aluminium was carried out by DNV Business Assurance Services UK Ltd.

“We congratulate Alcoa on achieving ASI Performance Standard Certification at its Portland, Australia smelting and casting operations. This certification not only acknowledges the efforts of Alcoa Portland but also recognizes Alcoa’s ongoing commitment to add additional ASI certified facilities throughout its global operations – now at 18 – and demonstrate that sustainability is not just a goal, but a core driver of success in the aluminum smelting industry.”

– Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI

“Alcoa and its joint venture partners at Portland Aluminium are delighted to have achieved ASI Performance Standard Certification for our Portland smelting and casthouse operations”
