Aluminerie Alouette has achieved ASI Chain of Custody (CoC) Standard V1 (2017) Certification for the operations, maintenance and services required for the production of primary aluminium at its Sept-Îles, Quebec, Canada facilities. The company achieved Performance Standard Certification in July 2020.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that Aluminerie Alouette has been certified against the ASI Chain of Custody Standard for its aluminium smelter and casthouse operations. With an annual capacity of 600,000 tonnes of primary aluminium, it is the largest smelter in the Americas.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI CoC Standard sets out requirements for the creation of a Chain of Custody for material that is produced and processed through the value chain into diverse downstream sectors. The implementation of ASI’s CoC Standard links verified practices at successive steps of the supply chain – certified under the ASI Performance Standard – to the products produced by ASI Certified Entities. The CoC Standard also confirms that appropriate policies and due diligence process are in place to identify and address critical supply chain issues, such as corruption, human rights abuses, materials originating from conflict-affected and high-risk areas in the supply chain, and responsible sourcing.

The independent, third-party audit of the Aluminerie Alouette operations was carried out by BNQ.

“We congratulate Aluminerie Alouette on achieving ASI CoC Certification for its Sept-Îles, Quebec smelting operations. With this certification, the company consortium made up of several ASI-certified Members demonstrates the overall collaborative spirit of our Members to create a responsible aluminium value chain. The noteworthy production capacity at the plant also provides a significant boost to the availability of ASI-Certified aluminium to downstream aluminium users.”

– Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI

“The fact that aluminum, especially Canadian aluminum, is a solution to climate change cannot be overstated. This new certification adds value to our metal for our shareholders’ customers, who are increasingly looking to source green aluminum. Our entire team and our partners can be proud of this news. Everyone works hard every day. This is a key hallmark in today’s globalized world.”

– Claude Gosselin, President and CEO of Aluminerie Alouette
