Gränges has achieved ASI Performance Standard V3 (2022) and Chain of Custody (CoC) Standard V2 (2022) Certification for the design and manufacture of rolled aluminium strips and sheets at its Gränges Konin SA facility in Konin, Poland. The certification of Gränges Konin SA finalises Gränges’ goal of achieving certification at all its aluminium rolling and recycling sites, globally.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that Gränges has been certified against the ASI Performance Standard V3 and Chain of Custody V2. With an annual production capacity of 140,000 tonnes, the company’s range of heat exchanger materials, construction sheet, battery casing materials, closure & packaging materials and common alloys serve a wide range of industries including building and construction, automotive, packaging and consumer electronics.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard V3 and ASI CoC Standard V2 were launched in May 2022 following a multi-year revision process.

The ASI Performance Standard defines 11 principles and 62 criteria under three sustainability pillars – Environment, Social, and Governance – with the aim to address pressing sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain, such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, circularity, and greenhouse gas emissions. The ASI CoC Standard sets out requirements for the creation of a Chain of Custody for material that is produced and processed through the value chain into diverse downstream sectors. The implementation of ASI’s CoC Standard links verified practices at successive steps of the supply chain – certified under the ASI Performance Standard – to the products produced by ASI Certified Entities. The CoC Standard also confirms that appropriate policies and due diligence process are in place to identify and address critical issues, such as corruption, human rights abuses, materials originating from conflict-affected and high-risk areas in the supply chain and support responsible sourcing.

The independent, third-party audit of the Gränges Konin SA operations was carried out by TÜV Rheinland Cert GmbH. A full listing of audit findings outlining evidence of conformances and minor non-conformance is available from page 5 of the summary audit report, linked below. Two minor non-conformances are noted under Criteria 4.3a-b Aluminium Process Scrap and 10.3a-c Forced Labour. Gränges Konin SA will be implementing a corrective action plan the implementation of which will be verified in follow-up audits. No non-conformances were identified during the Chain of Custody Certification audit.

“We congratulate Gränges for achieving dual ASI Certification at their Gränges Konin SA facility, and by extension achieving certification at all their aluminium rolling and recycling facilities. As aluminium gains increasing prominence in the building and construction, automotive, and packaging industries, the significance of responsible production, sourcing, and distribution of aluminium rolled products continues to grow. Gränges’ Konin facility, through the attainment of dual ASI Certification, offers downstream customers the assurance of sourcing responsibly produced aluminium products.”

– Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI

“The Konin operations have been part of Gränges since 2020. Much has been done in a short time to adapt the business to Gränges’ ambitious goals for sustainability in the entire value chain. Having all aluminium rolling and recycling facilities certified against ASI strengthens Gränges’ competitiveness and attractiveness to customers globally.”

– Fredrik Spens, President, Gränges Europe
