Kaiser Aluminum has achieved ASI Performance Standard certification with Provisional status for its Ingot casting centers, rolling mills and finishing production centers in Warrick County, Indiana, USA. The ‘Warrick’ rolling mill is one of four dedicated can sheet mills in North America and produces approximately 310,000 metric tons of flat rolled aluminium annually for use in packaging, including food containers, aluminium cans, and bottles.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that Kaiser Aluminum has been successfully certified against the ASI Performance Standard for responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium. The rolling operations near Evansville, Indiana were owned and operated by Alcoa until March 2021 and include a casthouse, hot mill, cold mills, and coating and slitting lines. The plant has received Provisional Certification under the ASI Interim Policy regarding Audits, Audit-Related Travel and Coronavirus, which clarifies the reasonable accommodations that can be made to audit plans in consideration of the current COVID-19 situation.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain. It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Governance, Environment and Social, which address key issues such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions.

The independent, third-party audit of the Kaiser Aluminum plant was carried out by ERM Certification and Verification Services. The audit was undertaken as a ‘desktop’ exercise with a remote review of relevant documentation. Some criteria requiring on-site evaluation by the auditor will be evaluated when an on-site audit can be scheduled.

Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI said, “We warmly congratulate Kaiser Aluminum for achieving ASI Performance Standard Certification. The acquisition of the Warrick Operations has provided Kaiser Aluminum with entry into the North American aluminium packaging industry, an end market with a strong focus on sustainability. We look forward to increasing growth of ASI Certifications in the United States’ aluminium sector.”

“This is a very important milestone for our Warrick facility and for our customers, as we continue to support the growing sustainability trends and secular shift to aluminum in the beverage and food packaging industry,” said Keith A. Harvey, President and Chief Executive Officer. “At Kaiser Aluminum, we recognize that long-term excellence requires sustainable practices. Achieving the ASI certification reflects our commitment as a strong and proactive member of the industry to foster improvement in sustainability and promote responsible and sustainable practices throughout the aluminum value chain.”
