Nemak S.A.B de C.V (Nemak) has achieved ASI Performance Standard Certifications for the production of cylinder heads for the automotive industry, including the related Product Development Centre (PDC) at Nemak Linz GmbH, Austria, and the manufacture of aluminium metal structure components at Nemak Pilsting GmbH, Germany.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that Nemak has achieved Certification against the ASI Performance Standard at two facilities in Europe. The Performance Standard V3 (2022) Certification applies to Nemak Pilsting GmbH, which manufactures and processes metal structure components for the automotive industry. The Performance Standard V3.1 (2023) Certification applies to Nemak Linz GmbH, which produces cylinder heads using ROTACAST technology and operates a Product Development Centre.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard V3 and ASI CoC Standard V2 were launched in May 2022 following a multi-year revision process. The ASI Performance Standard V3 defines 11 principles and 62 criteria under three sustainability pillars – Environment, Social, and Governance – with the aim to address pressing sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain, such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, circularity, and greenhouse gas emissions. The 2022 Standards and related documents underwent a minor update in 2023, accounting for editorial changes, correction of minor errors and for general clarification, culminating in the release of Performance Standard V3.1 (2023) and Chain of Custody Standard V2.1 (2023).

The independent, third-party audits of the Pilsting and Linz facilities were carried out by TÜV Rheinland Cert GmbH. A full listing of audit findings outlining evidence of conformances and minor non-conformances is available from page 5 of the summary audit report, linked below. Eight minor non-conformances are noted in the Nemak Pilsting GmbH audit report under Criteria 2.3b Environmental and Social Management Systems – Social, 2.8a-d Suspended Operations, 3.4a-f Stakeholder Complaints, Grievances and Requests for Information, 4.1a Environmental Life Cycle Assessment, 9.1a-d Human Rights Due Diligence, 9.2a-e Gender Equity and Women’s Empowerment, 10.6a-g Violence and Harassment and 11.1a Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Management System. Two major non-conformances are noted in the Nemak Linz GmbH audit report under Criteria 5.3a GHG Emissions Reduction Plans and 5.4 GHG Emissions Management; in addition, two minor non-conformances are noted under Criteria 2.3b Environmental and Social Management Systems – Social and 3.4a-f Stakeholder Complaints, Grievances and Requests for Information. Nemak Linz GmbH has been approved for an exemption relating to its GHG emissions performance under Criteria 5.3a and 5.4. Under this exemption, major non-conformances will not count towards Provisional Certification status. During the Certification Period, Nemak will be implementing a corrective action plan, which will be verified in follow-up audits.
