Sohar Aluminium Company LLC (Sohar Aluminium) has achieved ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) Certification with Provisional status for its Sohar Aluminium smelting and casthouse facility, located near Sohar, Oman. This is the first ASI Certification achieved in Oman.
Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that Sohar Aluminium has been certified against the ASI Performance Standard with Provisional status for its smelter and casthouse facility near Sohar, Oman. The company produces high-purity primary aluminium with an annual production capacity of over 390,000 tonnes in the form of ingots, sows and hot metal, which support a robust downstream aluminium industry in Oman.
The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain. It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Environment, Social, and Governance, which address key issues such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions. A certification with Provisional status provides a one-year certification period during which corrective actions can be undertaken, enabling the company to then achieve Full certification at its next surveillance audit.
The independent, third-party audit of the Sohar Aluminium operation was carried out by DNV Business Assurance Services UK Ltd. The audit took place prior to May 31, 2023, thus enabling a Performance Standard V2 certification.
“We congratulate Sohar Aluminium on achieving ASI Performance Standard Certification with Provisional status, the first ASI Certification in the country of Oman. Embracing sustainability involves a continuous process of evaluating and implementing comprehensive, positive transformations. ASI Certification empowers companies at various stages of this journey to evaluate their manufacturing practices against ESG criteria and serves as a platform and guide for continual improvement.“
– Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI
