Yunnan Aluminium Co., Ltd. (YACL) has achieved ASI Performance Standard V3 (2022) and Chain of Custody Standard V2 (2022) Certification for seven of its facilities, distributed across six prefectures of Yunnan, China. The vertically integrated operations cover most of the aluminium value chain, including bauxite mining, alumina refining, aluminium smelting, casting and semi-fabrication of aluminium products. YACL has an annual production volume of around 3 million tonnes of smelted aluminium.
Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that YACL has been certified against the ASI Performance Standard V3 (2022) and ASI Chain of Custody Standard V2 (2022) for seven facilities in Yunnan Province, China: Yunnan Wenshan Aluminium Co., Ltd., Yangzonghai Aluminium Electrolysis Branch of Yunnan Aluminium Industry Co., Ltd., Yunnan Yunlv Runxin Aluminium Co., Ltd., Yunnan Yunlv Zexin Aluminium Co., Ltd., Qujing Yunlv Yuxin Aluminium Co., Ltd., Yunnan Yunlv Haixin Aluminium Co., Ltd., and Heqing Yixin Aluminium Co., Ltd. YACL manufactures ultra-thin aluminum foil and casting aluminum alloy ingots leveraging hydropower energy resources in Yunnan Province. Its range of high-grade, customised, and standardised aluminium ingots and materials are used in defense and military sectors, aerospace, rail transportation, and the electronics industry.
The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard V3 (2022) was launched in May 2022 following a multi-year revision process. It defines 11 principles and 62 criteria under three sustainability pillars – Environment, Social, and Governance – with the aim to address pressing sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain, such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, circularity, and greenhouse gas emissions. The ASI CoC Standard V2 sets out requirements for the creation of a Chain of Custody for material that is produced and processed through the value chain into diverse downstream sectors. The implementation of ASI’s CoC Standard links verified practices at successive steps of the supply chain – certified under the ASI Performance Standard – to the products produced by ASI Certified Entities. The CoC Standard also confirms that appropriate policies and due diligence process are in place to identify and address critical issues, such as corruption, human rights abuses, materials originating from conflict-affected and high-risk areas in the supply chain and support responsible sourcing.
The independent, third-party audit of YACL was carried out by DNV Business Assurance Services UK Ltd.
“We congratulate Yunnan Aluminium Co., Ltd. on achieving dual ASI Certification for seven facilities across Yunnan. With both ASI Certifications in place from bauxite mining through to semi-fabrication operations, YACL demonstrates its commitment to responsible sourcing and production along the aluminium value chain, and provides its customers with the assurance that the more rigorous 2022 ASI Standards are guiding the company’s continuous improvement of their production processes.”
– Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI
“Yunnan Aluminium Co., Ltd. (YACL) has been consistently implementing green and low carbon development, accelerating the establishment of an integrated green industrial chain of “bauxite – alumina – carbon products – aluminium smelting – aluminium processing”. The authentication of ASI Performance Standard and ASI Chain of Custody Standard for the whole industrial chain of YACL can improve the management level of the company, promote compliance management and control risk in our supply chain, while helping to meet customers’ expectations of good practice and enhance our company competitiveness. We will continue to pursue the objective of ‘greener aluminium’ in YACL.”
