ASI is pleased to announce the release of new Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) Guidance materials to support ASI Entities, Indigenous Peoples, and ASI Accredited Auditors in understanding and applying FPIC requirements under the ASI Performance Standard.

In Version 3.1 of the Standard, FPIC became a mandatory obligation for ASI-Certified operations that may impact Indigenous Peoples directly or indirectly. In response, the ASI Board of Directors endorsed a 2023 initiative to develop guidance tailored to three distinct stakeholder groups: Certifying Entities, Indigenous Peoples, and Auditors. This approach ensures the diverse perspectives and responsibilities across ASI’s assurance system are clearly reflected.

All materials were developed under the leadership of the Indigenous Peoples Advisory Forum (IPAF) and the ASI Secretariat, with contributions from a dedicated Working Group and an expert in Indigenous rights. ASI remains committed to providing technical and other support to IPAF, Auditors, and Members on issues related to Indigenous Peoples’ rights—particularly around FPIC implementation.

About the FPIC Guidance Materials

The new resources include comprehensive guidance documents, as well as a supporting slide deck and a series of visual posters to make the materials more accessible and user-friendly.

  • For Entities, the guidance clarifies expectations and outlines implementation approaches.

  • For Indigenous Peoples, it sets out how rights are recognised and can be exercised within the ASI system.

  • For Auditors, it supports consistent, culturally aware assessments of conformance.

This suite of tools provides contextual information, practical steps, and key considerations to facilitate respectful and meaningful engagement with Indigenous communities.
