In August, ASI’s Australia-based Secretariat members met in Brisbane for a week of team-building, collaboration, and learning.

The event was designed to realign the team’s work with ASI’s broader strategy, strengthen relationships, and dive deeper into key projects and challenges. Engaging workshops and presentations throughout the week aimed to ensure that all ASI’s workstreams are both efficient and aligned with strategic goals, such as:

  • Team building and technology-focused workshops, covering cybersecurity, project updates, and communications strategies through interactive demos and discussions.
  • Process mapping and workstream insights, with detailed workshops on financial reporting, data and research priorities, and assurance activities, concluding with individual and group discussions.

A key highlight of the week was the participation of several guest speakers who brought unique, specific and invaluable insights, including:

  • Santino Woosup and Gloria Baira, representing the Angkamuthi people of Western Cape York, offered their insights on traditional knowledge and the cultural challenges faced by communities impacted by mining, providing a powerful reminder of the importance of integrating Indigenous perspectives into ASI’s work.
  • Alan Clark, Founder and Director of CM Group, delivered updates on global trends in the aluminium sector with a focus in Guinea and China, providing the team a deeper understanding of industry movements and future challenges.
  • Peter Erskine, Director of the Centre for Mined Land Rehabilitation at The University of Queensland, underscored the importance of sustainability and responsible land management in the context of mine rehabilitation and closure within the broader mining lifecycle.
  • Deanna Kemp, Director of the Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining, also from The University of Queensland, engaged the team in thought-provoking discussions around grievance and remedy mechanisms in the mining industry, focusing on the critical role of responsible practices in addressing community impacts.
