Organisations are working in an increasingly dynamic context, facing evolving political, economic and social pressures. Within these mounting global challenges, ASI continues to work on our shared mission to progress sustainability in the aluminium value chain on climate, circularity, nature and human rights.

In 2024, your support as a member has enabled us to launch our aluminium-specific GHG pathways method for decarbonisation, convene multi-stakeholder work to drive circularity, and work directly with Indigenous rightsholders on cumulative impact assessment methods for their traditional lands and ecosystem services. Our flagship initiative, the ASI Certification program continues to deliver independent third-party assurance in aluminium supply chains for more than 400 entity scopes across 61 countries.

The ASI Performance Standard aims to drive responsible production and support supply chain due diligence, and through a cycle of standards revisions, regular assurance and corrective action, is driving change in this supply chain. Uptake continues to grow upstream, and CRU Group data demonstrates the scale of Performance Standard uptake currently sitting between 20-45% of global production and rolling:

As we look ahead to 2025, we are preparing for the next major Revision of our standards and assurance framework to 2027. The Board and Standards Committee have considered the resource challenges and structural barriers facing ASI members, and have agreed to two major program adjustments to provide flexibility in this period. The first relates to treatment of non-conformances for Performance Standard criteria 5.3 and 5.4 on GHG emissions, as well as a conformance tool for enhanced clarity. The second relates to optional extension of existing Chain of Custody (CoC) certifications meeting specific eligibility conditions. Both will come into effect in early 2025.

A big thank you to everyone who joined, participated, was audited or otherwise engaged in ASI’s work this year. Your efforts helped create a platform for meaningful change, which we’ll continue to evolve throughout 2025. As always, please get in touch with us on what will help you to make the best use of our programs and drive change, in your organisation and more broadly.

On behalf of the ASI Secretariat, we wish you an enjoyable festive season and a successful new year ahead.
