David is Manager & Principal Engineer Environmental at the Light Metals Research Centre (LMRC). He is a specialist in environmental emissions from aluminium smelting, with expertise in the following aspects of the ASI Performance Standard:

  • Criteria 5 – Direct Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, particularly perfluorocarbon (PFC) gases
  • Criteria 6 – Emissions to air, particularly fluoride and particulate emissions

David is a Lead Author for the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change(IPCC), working to update its ‘2006 IPCC Guidelines for National GHG Inventories’, used by UNFCCC Parties for accounting GHGs from the aluminium industry.

He is an active member of TMS on environmental topics, with dozens of publications and was a keynote speaker and symposium organiser on GHGs in 2018. He is a regular instructor on the TMS Control of Potline Scrubber and Fugitive Emissions for Aluminium Smelters course.

His experiences include overseeing the completion of an international Fluoride Emissions Management Guides (FEMG) for the Asia-Pacific Partnership (APP) for Clean Development & Climate; mitigation projects to reduce PFC emissions by 50% in one Chinese smelter; working with clients across China, Europe, Australia, Russia and North America.

David’s multidisciplinary team at LMRC (www.lightmetals.co.nz ) can provide further complementary expertise to support other ASI Performance Standards.
