ASI’s CEO, Dr Fiona Solomon, was joined by Ms Wen Zhang and Mr Dong Chunming, at the International Forum on Sustainable Mineral Supply Chains, a two-day event hosted by the CCCMC.

Fiona spoke on a plenary panel on ASI’s work in China and globally and the challenges/opportunities for sustainable linkages from mine to end product. Fiona, Wen and Ms Li Didi from ASI member Xiamen Xiashun also spoke on the second day as part of a side session organised by Copper Mark. The agenda featured a diverse range of commodities and stakeholders, and presentations from China representatives highlighted that they are embracing the full gamut of sustainability issues, from both government and private sector, and seeking to deepen international engagement.

While there was much of interest that was presented, a couple of key points were:

  • OECD said that due diligence should be used to transform supply chains, not just sift high and low risk. That was refreshing to hear from them and aligns with ASI’s philosophy and approach to drive change.
  • The International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) said that their IFRS sustainability disclosure standards still need industry specific standards/metrics to support financial and capital markets. The speaker, who was a Board director, emphasized that materiality and proportionality were key for companies to be able to implement standards cost effectively and affordably. These are important messages for ASI’s standards revision process.

The ASI team also took the opportunity to engage with SNTO, including a site tour of their Changsha facilities. It was great to meet up with current and potential members in Xiamen and Changsha, and be able to discuss ASI’s progress and future directions.
