Aluminium Stewardship Initiative certifies Alunorf against ASI Performance Standard
Aluminium Norf GmbH (“Alunorf”), which is a joint venture owned by Hydro and Novelis in Neuss, Germany, is the latest company to be certified against ASI’s Performance Standard for environmental, social and governance performance. Alunorf is the world’s largest aluminium rolling and casting facility with more than 2,200 employees producing more than 1,500,000 tons per year.
Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced the first joint venture to be successfully certified against its standards for responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium. Alunorf produces hot- and cold-rolled aluminium sheet in many different alloys for a wide range of applications. Most of this material is shipped as coil stock to the plants of both parent companies for further processing. Aluminium is used to manufacture cans and all other kinds of packaging, body parts for automotive applications, components for shipbuilding, facade and ceiling panels and other parts for building and construction and much more.
The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The independent, third-party audit of Alunorf was carried out by GUTcert (AFNOR Group).
Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI said “ASI warmly congratulates Alunorf on their achievement of ASI Certification. The commitment of the Alunorf facility and the joint venture partners to the ASI process is greatly appreciated. As a major rolling facility, Alunorf connects into a wide range of downstream sectors that use aluminium for important products we then use in our daily lives. We hope this latest certification will continue to grow awareness of the importance of sustainability at every step of the supply chain.”
“Acting responsible for the future is key for Alunorf. Meeting the sustainability requirements of ASI’s Performance Standard is a great recognition for our efforts throughout the whole company. The certification is also a strong motivation not to rest – but to further optimize our processes and challenge ourselves every day”, said Oliver Hommel, Managing Director of Alunorf.
