Aluminium Stewardship Initiative certifies Crown Holdings, Inc. beverage can operations in Mexico against ASI Performance Standard

Crown Holdings, Inc. has achieved ASI Performance Standard certification for six beverage can body and end production plants in Mexico operating in Ensenada, Guadalajara, Toluca, Juarez, and Monterrey, as well as the Corporate Office in Monterrey. In 2020, Crown Mexico had an estimated market size of 15 billion beverage cans and an annual growth rate of up to 6%.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that Crown Holdings, Inc. has been successfully certified against the ASI Performance Standard for responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium for the Crown Mexico division’s can body production plants at Crown Ensenada (Ensenada B.C), Crown Guadalajara (Guadalajara, Jal.), Crown Toluca (Toluca, Edo.) and Crown Latas Monterrey (Juarez, N.L.); as well as for aluminium can ends and roll-on pilfer proof closures production at Crown Cierres Monterrey (Monterrey, N.L.); and Headquarters at Crown Cierres Monterrey (Monterrey, N.L.) in Mexico.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain. It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Governance, Environment and Social, which address key issues such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions.

The independent, third-party audit of the Crown Mexico plants and Corporate Office was carried out by DNV Business Assurance Services UK Ltd.

Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI said, “ASI warmly congratulates Crown Holdings, Inc. on achieving ASI Performance Standard Certification at all of its six Crown Mexico operations. Crown already undertakes sustainability-related activities across the environmental, social and governance spectrum, touching on emissions reductions, renewable energy sourcing, water use, material stewardship, circularity, employee engagement, and ethical sourcing, among others. The commitment to address the ESG footprint of the company’s operations in Mexico is underscored by the creation of a new Biodiversity Protection Plan and Human Rights Due Diligence process en route to achieving its ASI Certification.”

“With an estimated market size of 15 billion beverage cans in 2020 and annual forecast growth of up to 6%, Mexico is one of the countries critical to Crown’s extensive global footprint,” said Eduardo Argueta, President of Crown Mexico. “It is our duty to help support this growth sustainably and to contribute to the collective progress of our organization. We are proud to demonstrate our commitment by achieving certification from ASI, as part of our global efforts to deliver against the goals of our ambitious Twentyby30 sustainability program.”
