Consultation on sustainable mining at the Indian Social Institute in New Delhi

On 12 September, a one day consultation on sustainable mining was organised at the Indian Social Institute in New Delhi. Around 25 participants attended the meeting, including academics, experts, researchers as well as local leaders and human rights activists from Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Odisha.

The aim of the meeting was to share grassroot experiences and observations in regards to mining in these states. ASI presented on the requirements of the revised ASI Performance Standard (in particular criteria on Human Rights (9.1) and Free, Prior and Informed Consent (9.4)) as well as good practice examples from Australia and Suriname.  At the end of the meeting the participants agreed on an action plan, including how Gram Sabhas can be more included in the decision-making processes.

 

Meetings at the Science Hall in Raipur to mark the ‘United Nations Declaration on the Rights of the Indigenous Peoples’ (UNDRIP)

On Monday 12 and Tuesday 13 September meetings took place at the Science Hall in Raipur to mark the ‘United Nations Declaration on the Rights of the Indigenous Peoples’ (UNDRIP). Over 6000 Indigenous Peoples from all over India came to Raipur. The final day begun with a cultural walk where traditional Indigenous clothes were worn, and it was followed by speeches from the Honourable Governor of Chhattisgarh, Ministers and Social leaders. A copy of the ‘Rule on PESA 2022’ was submitted to the Governor which had been worked out and initiated by IPAF (Indigenous Peoples Advisory Forum) members and asks for communities to be more included in government processes and decision-making.

 

Workshop at the 10th International Conference and Exhibition on Bauxite, Alumina and Aluminium (IBAAS – JNARDDC 2022) in Raipur

On Friday 16 September ASI and IPAF held a one day workshop at the 10th International Conference and Exhibition on Bauxite, Alumina and Aluminium (IBAAS – JNARDDC 2022) in Raipur. The theme of the IBAAS 2022 conference was ‘Sustainability Challenges of Bauxite, Alumina & Aluminium Industry’.

Around 50 attendees including representatives from Vedanta, Hindalco, Nalco, Hydro,the International Aluminium Institute (IAI), Soquipami and various other companies in the aluminium supply chain.

The workshop provided an opportunity to explain ASI, the work of IPAF, the revised ASI Standards, certification process and the issues that aluminium companies in India face. The IPAF team presented on the importance of Human Rights and Indigenous Peoples Rights and the Constitutional and Legal provisions in India, and how Indigenous Peoples can be a partner in mining development processes. It was an interactive workshop and it provided a great opportunity for ASI and IPAF to connect with aluminium companies located in India.

Training and empowerment meeting of Indigenous Peoples Leaders of Chhattisgarh at the XISA Institute of Social Action in Raipur

On Monday 19 September a training and empowerment meeting of 25 Indigenous Peoples Leaders of Chhattisgarh was held at the XISA Institute of Social Action in Raipur. Ground realities from the impacts of mining on forest and natural resources were shared. The importance of collaboration was discussed in order to assist and accompany Indigenous Peoples in Chhattisgarh in their struggles.

ASI is grateful to all participants for their time and inputs in the workshops and meetings, and for their openness to discuss challenging topics.
