Fondital SpA has achieved ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) Certification at its three facilities in Vobarno, Italy. The company produces aluminium radiators, primary-grade aluminium alloys from recycling and structural castings for the automotive industry.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced Fondital SpA has been certified against the ASI Performance Standard at its three facilities in Vobarno, Italy, for the production of high-grade aluminium special alloys from recycled content and the manufacturing of automotive parts through melting, high-pressure die-casting, heat treatment and machining. The company is a joint member with Raffmetal SpA, which was certified against the ASI Performance Standard (V2) in 2020.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain. It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Environment, Social, and Governance, which address key issues such as biodiversity, labour rights, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions.

The independent, third-party audit of the Fondital SpA facilities was carried out by Bureau Veritas Certification. The audit took place prior to May 31, 2023, thus enabling a Performance Standard V2 certification. A full listing of audit findings outlining evidence of conformances and minor non-conformance is available from page 5 of the summary audit report, linked below. One minor non-conformance is noted under Criteria 3.1: Sustainability Reporting. During the Certification Period, Fondital SpA will be implementing a corrective action plan the implementation of which will be verified in follow-up audits.

“We congratulate Fondital SpA for achieving ASI Performance Standard (V2) Certification for their production of automotive castings. The growing application of aluminum in the automotive industry reflects the need for a lightweight, strong, safe and reliable material whose benefits apply to a broad range of uses. Fondital’s circularity principles demonstrate that the company integrates sustainability considerations in its production processes and policies.”

– Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI

“The certification of our activity according to the highest sustainability standards of the aluminium industry confirms our commitment to an environmental, social and economic responsible production chain. Today we are able to offer an entire production chain composed of more than 10 processes, starting from the use of primary-grade aluminium alloys from recycling with EPD certified low carbon footprint to the production of structural castings and battery cases. In this way, we guarantee our customers, who are increasingly sensitive to the issue of sustainability, significant energy savings and a reduction of the carbon footprint along the entire supply chain.”

– Orlando Niboli, President of Fondital
