Hindalco Industries Ltd has achieved ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) Certification for its Alupuram Works manufacturing operation in the Kochi district of Kerala, India. The plant currently produces a capacity of 8,000 tonnes of aluminium alloy extruded products per annum.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that Hindalco Industries Ltd has been certified against the ASI Performance Standard at its Alupuram Works plant. The Alupuram Works plant produces a range of products for use in construction, aerospace, automotive, marine and defence industries.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain. It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Environment, Social, and Governance, which address key issues such as biodiversity, labour rights, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions.

The independent, third-party audits of Hindalco Industries Ltd.’s Alupuram Works facility was carried out by CETIZION Verifica. The audit took place prior to May 31, 2023, thus enabling a Performance Standard V2 certification. A full listing of audit findings outlining evidence of conformances and minor non-conformances is available from page 5 of the summary audit report, linked below. Five minor non-conformances are noted under Criteria 1.1 Legal Compliance, 2.4 Responsible Sourcing, 6.3a Assessment and Management of Spills and Leakage (assessment), 7.1a Water assessment (mapping) and 7.1b Water assessment (risk assessment). During the Certification Period, Hindalco Industries’ Alupuram Works will be implementing a corrective action plan, which will be verified in follow-up audits.

“We warmly congratulate Hindalco Industries Ltd, for achieving ASI Performance Standard Certification at its Alupuram Works facility. The company’s production of extrusions caters to key industries including automotive, aerospace and building and construction, which benefit from aluminum’s lightweighting, strength, conductivity and corrosion resistance properties. Alupuram Works’ ASI Certification provides the company with an ESG performance benchmark developed specifically for aluminium sector actors, and a path for continuous improvement.”
